Ramadani Jumanne
Birth Date: September 3, 2002.
Ramadani Jumanne (Rama) originally came to us as one of the children selected by the local Street Chairmen. His parents died from assumed HIV complications and he has no brothers or sisters. He was being cared for by a distant relative before coming to our center in early 2009. He was one of the children who we took to the dentist earlier this year to have filling work done. He is stoic and brave and did not flinch once while in the dental chair. Academics do not come easily for him but he is one of the better athletes among the children.
Maria Paschal
Maria is Alfonse’s sister. She had been under the care of an aunt who had originally planned to give up both children to the orphanage. When we accepted Alfonse as a resident and then took Maria in day care, this aunt was able to contiue caring for her in the evenings and weekends along with her own son, Aly. This aunt had increasing problems caring for her culminating in her being left with us for care while the aunt attended a distant funeral. Essentially the aunt never returned and Maria thus became a full time resident of our facility. Both parents are dead from HIV complications.
Agnes Athmani
Agnes is our Cinderella story. She was under the long standing care of a maternal aunt who never liked her and who wanted her to not attend school so that she could work full time in the house caring for her own children. Despite this Agnes persevered in school winning the admiration of her instructors by her tenacity. We were introduced to her in June of this year . When we learned of her marginal circumstance we offered her a place in our orphanage as she was a good match for our 16 year old matron, Mwanaidi. She arrived at our site wearing borrowed cloths with her school books as her only possessions. She is our oldest girl and is about to enter Standard One, Tanzania’s version of high school. Both of her parents died when she was very young from assumed HIV problems.
Esther Lino
Esther was living in the Machame area with her grandfather. This was the same village that Gloria came from and they knew one another there as she is the daughter of Gloria’s mother’s sister. Reportedly her mother was murdered by her step father who is in prison. It remains unclear whether she has a biologic living father. She came to us in poor health suffering from malnutrition. She has received no schooling before coming to us and despite this she mostly identifies with our group of first graders. Hopefully with the instruction she is now receiving in preschool she will be able to catch up to this group academically.
Gift Laurance
Gift came to us as one of the original orphans referred to us by the Street Chairman in the Majengo area. He had been mostly living on the street under the occasional care of a grandparent. Both parents are deceased from assumed HIV complications. He reportedly has a baby sister who is under someone else’s care. Early in his stay with us he had some adjustment problems, but these have improved with steady nurturing and discipline. His school performance was also not very good initially but it has been steadily improving while at the orphanage.
Helena Ramadhani
Birth Date: August 22, 2003
Helena’s parents died when she was very young. She was being raised by her grandmother who did not have the means to support her. She has no siblings. Her situation was known to the local street chairman who referred her to us and she has been at the orphanage from the early days. Her grandmother does visit her regularly.

Winifreda Leonard
Birth Date: November 12, 2003
Wini was living with an elderly grandmother who was unable to provide for her after the death of her parents from HIV. She has no siblings and she has never had visitors since coming to the orphanage. She is a very shy and quiet child, but is very popular with all of the other children. She was one of my bravest children when we had to take a number of them to the dentist for dental fillings.
Viola Huseini
Birth Date: May 3, 2000
Viola’s parents are both deceased from HIV complications. She came to us at the recommendation of one of the local street chairman as her caregiver (a distant relative) was unable to care for her. She has no brothers or sisters. Viola considers herself as one of the orphanage’s “elder statesmen” since she is “so much older” than most of the other children and is already in grade 3.
Jenipha Anzelimu
Birth Date: March 9, 2000
This lovely girl came to us at the recommendation of the street chairman where she lived. Her grandmother had to make a choice between her and her younger sister since she was not capable of caring for both. They do come to visit her at the orphanage. Both parents are dead from HIV. Jenipha is always one of the leaders of the kids and has made herself personally in charge of all her fellow first graders. I can trust her to distribute things like pencils and rulers because she is always fair and thorough. She has scored as high as first place in her class rankings.
Victor Emmanuel
Birth Date: August 2, 2002
Victor came to us by referral from the street chairman in the area where he lived. We know little of his background other than his parents died of HIV complications. The person caring for him was very poor, and has never visited our orphanage in the year that Victor has been with us. Reportedly he has no siblings. Victor is clever and very athletic and he is our most serious soccer player. He is on the quiet side so I was pleasantly surprised to see that he scored in the top ten of his classmates on his grade one exams.
Gloria Emili
Birth Date: January 12, 1998
Gloria came to our attention last October when we were approached by someone in the bank that asked if we could look into her living situation. She was being cared for on a farm on the slopes of Kilimanjaro by an elderly grandmother who was partially paralyzed by a stroke and by a grandfather who had lost a leg from an infection. Her mother died from HIV in 2005 and her father was never known. She has no brothers or sisters. After a long and tearful meeting with her caregivers who realized that they had little opportunity to offer her, she came to live with us.
Abubakari Mohamed
Birth Date: June 28, 2002
Abu is one of the original Islamic boys that came to the orphanage at the recommendation of his street chairman. He was under the care of a poor aunt and grandmother after his parents died of unknown causes. He has no known siblings. He is active and athletic and always ready for a game of football.
Birth Date: May 22, 1995
Thomas came to us this year. He had been living with his elderly grandmother on her small farm about 5 miles south of the orphanage. He was forced to leave school his 4th year to help her manage the farm as she is very old and arthritic. Both of his parents have been dead for a long time. He has no siblings. He started walking to the Pasua area earlier this year looking for work and begging and that is how he came to our attention. His greatest desire was to return to school which we were able to help him do by clearing up the hold on his academic records at his previous school where he had never been able to pay any of their required “fees”. He has stepped into a role as the elder brother to all of the other children and is a most valuable asset at the orphanage.
Tyson Joseph Mushi
Birth Date: June 5, 2004 (Although the year has been questioned)
This boy was brought to our attention late last year when he was found mostly living on the streets locally. He was under the questionable care of an older person who assumed marginal responsibility for him after the death of both parents from HIV problems. Concerned neighbors brought him to the orphanage in poor health. Subsequent testing found that he was HIV positive. He has had severe health problems from his HIV including TB currently under treatment and bacterial pneumonia that hospitalized him in May of this year. He was begun on retroviral therapy for his HIV after this hospitalization and is now healthy and doing quite well. He is a most unusual child in that he is very attentive to everything around him often collecting flowers and stones that he carries in his pockets.
Edward Clement
Birth Date: June 7, 2001
This boy was referred to us by one of the street chairmen. He had been under the care of his grandmother who could not afford his upkeep. Both parents are dead from HIV complications. He has no brothers or sisters. He is one of the leaders of our group of first graders and is highly placed academically in that class. He craves attention and is one of the most affectionate of our children

Joseph Anslaus
Birth Date: April 4, 2003
This young boy lost both parents to HIV. He was being cared for by a friend of Teacher’s who was a matron at his wedding. He has a living aunt who cares for his younger sister and she has visited us only once. He is a quiet and shy boy who is very emotional and responsive to kindness and a caring gesture. He is always one of the first to greet us on our arrival at the orphanage.
Severa Patric
Birth Date: August 16,2006
This child came to us at the recommendation of her local street chairman. She was living with an “elder mother” (Someone serving as her mother who is not directly related to her) who was unable to provide for her. Her parents are dead from unknown causes and she has no siblings. She was very ill in late May of this year with a combination of malaria and enteric fever that required aggressive medical treatment. Of all of the orphanage children she wins the award for the “best giggle”.
Zainabu Seleman
Birth Date: October 25, 2003
This sweet young lady was living with an “elder mother” who was unable to provide for her. At the recommendation of her street chairman, she came to our facility. Her parents are deceased from HIV complications and she has no siblings. Her major health problem was dental and this has been completely remedied using our local dentist. Dental fillings are usually done without anesthesia here and she had six teeth done without even flinching. When asked why she was so brave she said it was because she trusted the dentist.
Jenipha Japheti
Birth Date: July 7, 2002
This is Jenipha #3 (It is a popular name!). This young girl came to us at the recommendation of the local street chairman. Both parents are long deceased from HIV problems and she was living with a poor elderly grandmother. She has no siblings. She did very well in preschool and we anticipate that she will soon compete with some of the other children for honors in the local school.
Richard Nelson
Birth Date: November 11, 2002
This boy came to us under unusual circumstances. He had been cared for by an poor elderly woman who threatened suicide if we would not assume his care. This same approach was used by the care giver of Abu and fortunately is not a common technique. This woman obviously still cares for the boy as she does visit. His parents are dead from HIV complications. We do not know of any siblings although he might have a sister living elsewhere according to his prior care giver.
Izaak Antoni
Birth Date: Unknown – given 1/1/2004
This is Julius’s older brother. The two of them were identified at the preschool as orphans in need. They had been living with an uncle and grandparents who were unable to provide for the two of them. These relatives visit occasionally. Both parents are deceased from HIV complications. Julius has episodic problems with asthma, but is otherwise healthy. He is a quiet, but very active child.
Benson Moses
August 8, 2005
Benson and his younger sister Jenipha were brought to the orphanage in May of this year by the elderly lady caring for the two of them. She had heard about our place so she came to offer both of these children to us as residents. Their parents are both dead from unknown causes. After a prolonged discussion with the care giver we admitted Benson and accepted Jenipha for day care. She still goes home at night with the care giver who is able to provide for her given this arrangement, but we anticipate that she will eventually be a resident with us. Benson appears healthy and active and has had no problems adjusting to living at the orphanage.

Both of her parents are dead from HIV complications. She had been living with a grandmother who was unable to provide for her. Her situation was brought to our attention by her street chairman. She has no siblings. Her grandmother visits the orphanage occasionally. She has a pension for the name “Amina” and has named both her favorite doll and a toy lemur by this name.
Grace Daniel
Birth Date December 1, 2005
This child’s parents both died from HIV complications. She was under the care of one of her grandmothers who was very poor and she arrived at our orphanage fairly malnourished. Her circumstance was brought to our attention by the street chairman in her area and by his supervisor, the ward executive officer. She has no known siblings. Although her grandmother lives fairly close to us, she has not visited.
Jenipha Joseph
Birth Date: November 23, 2001.
Jenipha was one of the original children who came to us from the Street Chairmen. She is from the Boma area and has no siblings. We do not know the exact cause of the death of her parents but believe it was HIV related. Jenipha is known as Jenipha Number Two since we have four girls with this name. She is a most elegant young lady and takes great care in choosing her clothes and shoes making sure that things match. This and the way she walks and carries herself make me think that she is going to be a model some day. She is also one of our top students finishing seventh in her class of 120 at the end of first grade.
Julius Antoni
Birth Date Unknown, given 1/1/2005
He was identified at the preschool as an orphan in need along with his brother Isaac and came to the orphanage at its inception along with his brother. Both parents died of HIV and he was living with an uncle and aging grandparents who were unable to care for them. These relatives have only rarely been to visit these two boys at our place. He has had health problems with asthma and has had to be on medicines for this at times.
Fatuma Saidi
BD April, 2005
She came to us along with Alfonse at the recommendation of the street chairman. Her parents are dead for a long time from unknown causes. She has an older brother about age 18 who has visited her once in late 2009. She had been living with an aunt who was unable to provide for her. She is one of our Islamic children and attends the local mosque with the other Islamic children on Fridays.
Alfonse Paskali
Date of Birth 5/24/05
He was identified as an orphan in need by one of the street chairman in March of 2009 and subsequently came to the orphanage shortly thereafter. Both of his parents are dead from presumptive HIV. He and his younger brother and sister were living with their aunt who lives about 2 kilometers from our place. She was unable to care for all three of them with her meager salary derived from selling food to local workers. She continues to care for his siblings and we have assisted her financially in this.
